PEONIES FOR SHADE
These two Japanese peonies require light to medium shade, and offer a refreshing contrast to hostas, ferns, and other more familiar shade plants.
Paeonia japonica Number Zones 4-8 Fall 2003 Essential perennial for shade, forming clumps of gray-green foliage to 24" tall. Single white flowers with yellow stamens bloom in May. The fruits are bright red receptacles with dark blue seeds perched on them; they remain beautiful for several weeks in late summer. 5/6 yr. plants.
Paeonia obovata Number Zones 4-8 Fall 2003 Rare Japanese/Chinese species with rounded rose-pink flowers in June, blooms about 2-3 weeks later than P. japonica. Gorgeous seedheads are beautiful for weeks. To 36" tall. 6/7 yr. plants.
