Also known as Allium maximowiczii. This is an alpine allium species from the mountains of central Japan. It grows about a foot tall, with pink button flowers on stiff stems in August. Light shade to sun in a gritty, well-drained soil. Easy.

One of the aristocrats of the shade garden. Handsome foliage resembles Cimicifuga, topped in late summer by wiry stems bearing pendant pink flowers, to 3 feet tall. Hard to find.

Tall, vigorous East Asian species to 3' called "dancing crane" in Japanese, which it resembles. There is one leaf with a least 15 leaflets, with a green flower held high above the leaf. The spathe is green, with a very long, yellow, whip-like spadix that arches up and descends. Easy.

One of the rarest and most dramatic of the Japanese arisaemas, native to Shikoku Island, rarely offered for sale. The swooping purple striped spathe is dramatically rolled at the edges, and is held above the one divided leaf. Needs very well-drained soil, high in organic content, in light to medium shade. Wrongly listed in some books as a synonym of A. sikokianum, this blooms 3 weeks later here. The spadix is not bulbous, and the purple spathe hood droops way down over the tube. Name is from "zazen", Japanese Buddhist meditation, as the flower recalls a bowed monk meditating. Hard to find. Good garden plant. Mid-spring. Rhymes with "ma can sew".
Arisaema sikokianum Patterned Leaves Zones 5-9 #029-035
This is a rare form of our most popular arisaema, and a star of the spring garden, this widespread Japanese/Chinese species is unsurpassed for "wow" impact. The startling white "golfball" spadix is displayed inside the purple spathe. In addition to the showy flowers, this form has green leaves splashed with silver for all summer foliage interest. Early to mid-season. Needs excellent drainage in rich woodsy soil in shade.

Tall, vigorous species from Shikoku Island, Japan. Green spathe has a long-extended tip and droops way down over the face of the tube. Translucent spathe is especially beautiful when back-lit. Easy garden plant. Late spring bloom.

Very similar overall to A. fhunbergii, but hardier, somewhat coarser in appearance, and often with broader leaflets. Easy and vigorous, good garden plant.

Evergreen clump-forming Japanese species with gray-green leaves to 6" long, with cloudy silver patterns, taking on a rosy blush in winter. Name means "asarum resembling an asarum"; taxonomists are deranged. Large tubby brown flowers in spring. Easy plant essential for the shade garden, glorious when the hostas are frozen mush.

Good garden plant, or essential cool greenhouse plant for those who enjoy horticultural one-upspersonship.
